While rummaging through the old VHS collection I came across the recording of the Academy awards from 2002 when we were nominated for ‘Give Up Yer Aul’ Sins’.
It still feels a bit unreal watching it back & I realise that I actually remember very little from the night, I suppose it’s what you could call a blur. The award for best animated short was presented by Australia’s finest Hugh Jackman & Naomi Watts & poor old Naomi really struggled with the Irish boys names. Cathal had it bad but poor old Ruairi Robinson was completely mispronounced. You’d think with all the preparation that goes into the Oscars that they might practise on how to say the nominees names properly?
… and so we lost but it was still nice to be Oscar losers. Oscar night was great fun but before the event itself they have what is known as the Oscar lunch. This is a much quieter less formal affair and it’s really weird because you feel like you know almost everyone in the room as they all tend to be a bit on the famous side. Because there are no cameras there all the nominees tend to relax and it’s a very friendly atmosphere.
The dress code said ‘casual’. Of course I let my savagery show by turning up in Jeans! How was I to know by ‘casual’ they meant ‘Armani’???

Here’s the poster for the 2002 Oscars, which incidentally was designed by the brilliant Alex Ross.
All in all it was a great couple of weeks and it would be nice to go back there someday!
