The Princess and the Frog

There is a big hullabaloo about this latest feature from Disney as not only is it their first under the new creative director John Lasseter, but it’s also a return to HAND DRAWN animation!!!

It will be interesting to see how the audience respond and whether young children reject it as old fashioned. Personally I don’t think so, as young children  still watch all the old Disney classics from ‘Snow White’ right up to the ‘Lion King’ It still seems like the three most important elements are: story, story & story!

Here’s a look at the trailer for the film:

The other talking point about this film is the fact that it features Disney’s first African American lead character, and so for this very reason the film will be micro analysed from all kinds of angles that will of course go right over the heads of the intended audience.

Here’s John Lasseter talking a bit about it (the animation clips are kind of the same…)

So I’m sure there are a lot of old school artists hoping this film does well and that the craft of hand drawn animation may make a bit of a come back. The film will be released in December 09, so until then we’ll have to wait and see…

  1. I’ve been following this production as much as I can and I’m very excited about it. I’m still more impressed by 2D than 3D animation and felt so disappointed by Disney’s last effort ‘Home on the Range’. This looks like a return to form, here’s hoping that everything sits well and that the story is solid! There’s a lot riding on this but fingers crossed it’s up there with Beauty, Aladdin and Lion King etc.
