Art Direction in Animation

An animated film has never been nominated for an Art Direction Oscar!

Beauty and the Beast (1991) and Up (2009) are the only animated films ever to be nominated for Best Picture, while Waltz with Bashir (2008) is the only animated picture ever nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.

However an animated film has never been up for Best Art Direction.

Now saying that, Avatar did win last year but many would not regard this as a solely animated piece as the lines are very blurred with this film. I must say though it thoroughly deserved the win for an absolutely remarkable achievement, and perhaps it will be the turning point for the animated films to be recognised. … read more

Chart of Fame

Former Spline Doctor Angus Maclane made this funny chart of fame.

Fame-Chart.0011

It’s a regular joke here how animators are among the least recognized people in the entertainment industry. Oh well, we really didn’t get into animation because we wanted to be famous…

Animation with Improvisation

As mentioned in a previous post, John Canemaker came to visit recently. After his wonderful presentation on the Art and Flair of Mary Blair he talked about his life and the several different jobs he’s had throughout his career. He explained how it is so important to do other types of acting when you’re in the field of animation. Be it stage or film, an animator should step out from behind their monitor and desk and act in front of an audience at least once in their life.

This made a lot of sense to me as I had been toying with the idea for a while. I decided to take action and immediately searched for a improvisation course in Dublin and luckily enough I found a masterclass that would be starting the following week. I couldn’t wait! … read more

It’s Movember at Brown Bag Films!

It’s that time of year again at Brown Bag where we  say goodbye to any facial hair we had and start growing  fabulous new moustaches again.

This is the second year we’ve done Movember in BBF and it certainly won’t be our last. Though the cold season has begun (well, does it ever really end in Ireland?!) we have braved the frostbite to our upper lips and wiped away former traces of  face fungus as we begin to grow a new misplaced eyebrow.

There are lots of different types of soup strainers as shown below, and we all have our favourites though most of us can’t grow them so have to stick with what we can!

Up’s Irish Premiere

On an unusually sunny Sunday for Ireland I found myself at the cinema …but I didn’t mind at all as it was for the premiere of Pixar’s new film, Up.

Though I was initially very annoyed when I first heard that Up wasn’t going to be released in Ireland until October 9th – over 4 months after its US release - I still couldn’t wait to see it.

Luckily for me, 3 weeks before its general release, I got to see Up at the Irish premiere which was presented in stunning Disney Digital 3-D. There was also a Q&A afterwards with writer/director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera. … read more

What’s in a name?

The official annual ranking of baby names for England and Wales has been published recently by the Office for National Statistics and ‘Olivia’ has topped the poll for the girls!

With Brown Bag’s series Olivia being so well recieved across the pond, is it just a coincidence or what?!

Underrated Animation Gems

When people mention a Warner Brothers animated feature film that they missed on theatrical release, ‘The Iron Giant’ is always it. Luckily for ‘The Iron Giant’  it was popularised much later on DVD release.

There is however another film in their back catalogue that is truly a gem, and just as criminally unknown as ‘The Iron Giant’ was.

This film is called “Cats Don’t Dance”

Animation needs less talking and more acting!

“Animation is not the art of drawings that move but the art of movements that are drawn.”  -  Norman McLaren
