Harold – Brown Bag’s New Intranet

It really has been a manic week in here with the Oscar nomination. I don’t want to call such brilliant news ‘a distraction’ but It was also the week we launched HAROLD, our in house Intranet. This is a portal where we centralise all internal communication and try and make the move from existing over dependence on email as the central communication tool. The theory is that we will discuss issues on our internal blog and when decisions are made, we move to our Wiki which is like an encyclopaedia, keeping all the information you need from what how to light the interior of Olivia’s classroom to information about holiday entitlements. Thanks to the talents of Arekibo for a nice job on the interface design

Harold Portal

Personally, I send and receive well over a hundred emails a day and find Email almost counter-productive as a communication tool. So this Intranet is a really big change in the way we work in here and hopefully everyone will adapt to it over the coming weeks and months. There are already a list of bugs so I will update you on the progress and the mistakes we will invariably make.

As well as developing the intranet, over the past year we have been developing a bespoke 3D asset management system (when I say “we”, I really mean Darren Hyland who is at the heart of all of our technology R&D). This was done with our friends in Dominoworks who went above and beyond the brief and delivered a brilliant system for us which sits on our IBM servers. This new asset tracker allows us to manage a very sophisticated 3D pipeline and log every stage of the production process for the hundreds and thousands of 3D assets we work with. It has taken many incarnations and migraines before we arrived at Version 1.0 and we expect to have 2 major updates before the end of the year.
