The Future of 3DTV

Last week I attended the 3D masters seminar at BAFTA in London, which focused on the future of 3DTV. It was a packed day of keynote speeches from industry professionals giving their opinion on the state of play of 3DTV.

The 3D industry is fairly mature now in Hollywood and the feature film industry but not without its issues, and 3DTV is still at the early stages of its development. As one speaker put it; the baby is born and is now a young child so let’s see what it grows into.

So, one year on from the big hype of 3D TVs and broadcasters starting to beam into our homes, what is the future of 3DTV or does it even have a future?

The short answer is yes, it does have a future and a place in our homes but it isn’t going to replace 2D television. It will be an option for a niche market that want to watch an event or special one-off program/film in 3D. I don’t think anyone sees us all sitting down to watch our daily soaps or the news in 3D. What added value would we get from that?

“Origin” is being made under the Irish Film Board’s Short Shorts scheme and will premiere on July 9th at the Galway Film Fleadh 2011.
For anybody of a technical mindset, James gave some details on the production -
“Origin has been produced primarily using Maya, Mental Ray while also relying heavily on its compositing pipeline. The streets of Dublin have been captured using a combination still photographs and HD Footage. This data was then treated with good old fashioned background painting and complimented with 3D models and environments. A large number of shots have been composited employing projection mapping techniques.”

’Origin’ features a young man who is on the brink of emigration, but comes to realise the spirit he’s leaving behind as he races through the streets of Dublin.  James gave some details on the pipeline and techniques he used on the short film:

“‘Origin’ has been produced primarily using Maya and Mental Ray while also relying heavily on its compositing pipeline. the streets of Dublin have been captured using a combination of still photographs and HD footage. This data was then brought into Maya for 3D short setup. From this, templates were output and then painted with good old fashioned Photoshop background painting. The templates were then projected back onto the 3D models and environments. The shorts were then brought into compositing with a large number of shots composited employing projecting mapping techniques”.

3-D – First impressions from a newbie..

I’ll be the first to admit it….I tend to only go to the cinema for:

a) A film i can’t wait to see eg. Star Wars (prequels, sequels, 3-D or whatever he does next), any new James Bond film etc

b) Something that i know will benefit from a cinema setting eg. the surround sound in the Transformers movies was flying all over the shop, all the time…in a brilliant way!

c) 2 hours of mindless entertainment eg. Mission Impossible III – butt-thumping explosions are just so much better in a cinema….even if Tom Cruise’s smug mug is 10 ft bigger…

The last animated film I went to in the cinema was The Incredibles (which I loved…) and I missed Wall-E so after hearing about just how good Pixar’s new film UP was, I thought it was time to see what all this stereoscopic fuss was about!
