One of the big advantages of working on a 3D show over a 2d show is that it’s easier to keep the character on model! The problem with 2D shows is that you have so many artists touching the characters at various stages that it is essential you keep them all drawing the character the same way or the model can drift and end up not looking right.
Because we had created Olivia as a 3D model, it meant that she would always look the same, although animators still have to keep her movements on model so that the things she does still feels like it is Olivia and not something another character might do.
Today was a very sad day in the studio, as the Olivia statue that has sat proudly on our shelf all through production was returned to its owner Ian Falconer, creator of the Olivia books. The stunning statue of Olivia is a one of a kind creation and was based on the books’ original illustrations. Olivia will be missed, which is why we dedicated this post to her last day at Brown Bag before she headed off to New York.
‘Olivia’ is going to be in competition in the TV series section of Annecy this year! This is a great honour as Annecy is an extremely difficult festival to get into due to the enormous amount of films entered.
Olivia launched on Nick Jr in the UK today so it is finally available to viewers in Ireland… or at least to those of you who suscribe to a satellite provider!
Because it’s Movember, and I wouldn’t be the first Brown Bagger to show off some dodgy hair-dos, I thought i might share a tip: Don’t try to develop designer fuzz whilst trying to hit impossible deadlines at work!
….I figure if you’re gonna blog you may as well go all-out with the personal shame!
The opening titles are one of the most important elements in any TV show. They should capture the essence of what it’s about, give a glimpse of character, and hopefully be entertaining with a nice little narrative. If the opening title sequence works right it should have your audience hooked right from the start. .
The best part of working in animation is seeing kids’ reaction to the shows we create. Sometimes that’s easy to forget when we’re in the middle of production madness, so it’s nice to be reminded. Here’s a little clip of baby Olivia proving she’s not too young to rock out to Darren Hendley’s Olivia theme song on TV!
Woke up early today, it’s going to be busy. I have retakes to check with all dialogue fixed (hopefully), two Olivia episodes for rough and final animation checking, and one blocking pass episode, plus a few surprises.
Arrive studio at 7 AM. The streets are pretty empty at this time and it took only 20 minutes to get to the studio, there’s a few people here but they are leaving soon, they have been here all night.
